Recently, my mom purchased for me one of the many “sequels” of Jane Austen’s beloved Pride and Prejudice classic. Entitled Mr Darcy takes a wife by Linda Berdoll, it aims to give readers the possible world beyond what Jane Austen has written for her characters. Logically speaking, it is what one would call a fanfiction. I am really looking forward to reading not only this book, but the rest of the sequels that various other authors have to offer.
I am quite the Pride and Prejudice fan. But in all honesty, my love for the story stemmed originally from the 2005 movie adaptation of the book, starring Keira Knightley as its Elizabeth Bennet. But based on how I’ve seen books and its movie adaptations, I’ve always been inclined to love the original books rather than the movie itself. I am not quite sure if I can say the same for this for I so dearly love the movie, but I am willing to give it a chance. Now that I have a better oppurtunity to appreciate the book, I have plans on really reading Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice book. Only afterwards will I take the time to read the various sequels.
Actually, I’ve convinced myself so much that I want it, that most of my money is geared towards saving up for the rest of the sequels. Since I have a bunch of books (non Pride and Prejudice-related) that I have yet to read (such as Anne Rice, romance novels and the like..), I don’t think I’ll be buying the rest of the sequels anytime soon. Probably around October. But, as soon as I read each book, I plan on giving reviews for you readers, so you can see which books are worth reading.
I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the books, and reviewing them.

Oh my God. I can so relate with you. Had I the funds for books I would’ve bought the “sequels” to P&P. And I also ADORE the movie! I so fell in love with it. Argh.
…Or perhaps that’s just me and my rather absurd love for historical movies, particularly those under the romance genre. ~_~
@ Stacy: We share a love for historical romance! 🙂 The sequels are a bit expensive, ranging mostly in the Php500 and above range, which can be quite painful sometimes..
Buy used books. I always purchase sequels that are listed as like new. Ebay is a great source.
@ Barbara: I try buying used books when I can. The sequels though for P&P, all that I have seen so far are new. I haven’t found any used ones. Ebay is a great source, but my mother hates online shopping so it’s out of the question. Thanks for the advice though. 🙂
Why not use the public library?
@Sarah: I wish it were that easy. Sadly, the system of a public library does not exist in my country. And the libraries that do exist here are not at all like Western libraries. 😦

@Sarah: I am from the Philippines. Sadly, the idea of a public library that lends out books to its citizens is a thing of the mind that has yet to be concretized. I wish they would consider building one like that, but funds are limited and the possibility of a public library happening in the near future is close to nil.
Personally there was only one sequel which I loved as much as the original, which was “Mr. Darcy Presents His Bride” by Helen Halstead. I loved it! Couldn’t put it down at all! Devoured it the day I bought it! Such a brilliant read and the author truly paid attention to character development and the language of the book. I dare say I almost cried in some parts. READ IT. A DEFINITE READ. I’d say, don’t read anything else.. but I haven’t read the rest to know if they were any good XD But this was PERFECT.
But I had the misfortune to also read the “Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman” Series by Pamela Aidan. Initially i liked it. it has its good parts and its refreshing at times. But the second novel dragged and added new characters I do not care for. It was a bit tedious to read,
@KT: I technically have not yet read the P&P novel, seeing as I chose to read S&S instead for my book report. But thank you so much for your comment. “Mr Darcy Presents His Bride” was actually the first book that I encountered in relation to the P&P sequels, though I only glanced upon the summary and have not bought nor read the book. Will try to follow up on your recommendation and buy it if I have the money and the opportunity to.
Haha. I hope I can read everything and decide if the “fanfiction” books are indeed a good read.
