Philippine blogging and bloggers

This is my entry in celebration of Women’s Month. For the contest held by WikiPilipinas, and Other entries found here.

The Filipino people have always been thought of as the country of househelpers, nurses, sea voyagers, and other seemingly ‘demeaning’ jobs and . We’ve been unjustly stereotyped into the jobs that our proud and very patriotic OFW’s and migrants have chosen to take on for the sake of their family and future. We’ve been figuratively placed into this limited space that has been labeled as the “characteristics and appearances of a Filipino”, and with that in mind, it has been very difficult to escape from the image that has been associated to the Filipino people.

Yet, Filipino bloggers nationwide and even abroad have slowly begun changing how the world views Filipinos. Though it seems like such a small thing, the appearance of more and more Filipino bloggers have given people a better view of the realities behind who we are as a people. Blogs have introduced our culture, our way of life, and who we truly are to those who do not know the truth. From our homes and offices, the internet has allowed us access to the world, giving us the chance to promote our interests and views on just about anything in society.

It isn’t simply a one-sided tool for communication. It has allowed us the opportunity to prove what kind of people we truly are. To a reality far from the scandals and stereotypes.

The power to prove ourselves is at hand. Blogging has become more than just a hobby, and bloggers have become more than just a small group of people talking about small time things. Through blogs, bloggers have shown their skills in the aspects of communication and expression. For the common Filipina, this has uplifted the views of foreigners towards what was commonly known as mail-order brides. Filipinas around the world have exhibited their prowess in using the internet. Hot topics about marriage, parenting, sports, books, cooking, advocacies, and even humor filled blogs and such have become frequently visited sites of not only fellow Filipinos but also people in other countries.

It has become an area of expertise for many who have become professional bloggers, or those who have a personal expertise to write about and share to the world. Most Filipinas not only have the advantage of writing in very good English, but there is also the advantage of the Filipinas’ skill to adapt their writing to anything. Coming from a very rich Spanish, American and Japanese-occupied history, the Filipina can write about anything uniquely Filipino, without making anyone from abroad seem entirely isolated. With the variety that comes from our background, there is always something of interest that can be found in the various subjects that the different blogs touch upon.

The Filipino hospitality, mixed in with our skills at adaptability and communication, in addition to the interests and expertises’ of various Filipinas around the world, have led blogging to become the starting point for something great and the Filipinas to something more than what people assume them to be. Little by little, blogging has given Filipinas the chance to prove their worth against stereotypes, and against bloggers from abroad.
